剣道は武道でありスポーツではない

Kendo is not "sport". Kendo is "Budo".

剣道はスポーツではなく、武道です。スポーツと武道の違いを明確に説明するのは難しいですが、個人的な印象として、スポーツは勝ち負けを重視する一方、剣道では勝ち負けが全てではないと感じます。剣道は人間としての成長を目的としていて、試合においては、相手を尊重し、正々堂々と戦い、勝った後も感謝の意を示します。これが剣道の大きな特徴だと思います。

Kendo is not a sport, but a martial art. It is difficult to clearly explain the difference between sports and martial arts, but my personal impression is that while sports focus on winning and losing, kendo does not consider victory and defeat as everything. Kendo aims for personal growth, and during matches, we respect our opponents, fight fair and square, and express gratitude even after winning. I believe this is a major characteristic of kendo.

スポーツでは、勝利を喜びとすることが一般的ですが、剣道では勝利を喜ばないことが大切です。剣道の根本には、相手との命のやり取りがあるため、正々堂々と戦った結果を誇りに思いつつ、相手に敬意を示すことが重要です。剣道は人間形成の道とも言われ、剣道においては、人格を成長させることが重視されています。

In sports, it is common to celebrate victories, but in kendo, it is important not to rejoice in winning. At the core of kendo is the exchange of life with the opponent, so it is crucial to take pride in the results of a fair fight while showing respect to the opponent. Kendo is often called the path of personal development, and in kendo, great emphasis is placed on the growth of one's character.

しかし、剣道の競技性だけを重視すると、勝利に執着しすぎて剣道の本来の目的が見失われることがあります。剣道をオリンピック競技にすることについても意見が分かれるところです。オリンピック競技に剣道を加えることで剣道人口が増える可能性はありますが、オリンピックは国のプライドをかけた勝利が求められるため、剣道の本来の目的が曖昧になる危険性があります。剣道は勝つことを目的としていないため、オリンピック競技には適さないという考え方もあります。

There are divided opinions on this issue. While including kendo in the Olympic Games may increase the number of kendo practitioners, the Olympics demand victories for national pride, which could pose a risk of blurring the original purpose of kendo. Since kendo does not aim for winning, some believe that it is not suitable for the Olympic Games.

剣道におけるビデオ判定についても、意見が分かれています。ビデオ判定を導入すると、技の当たりや外れに焦点が当たりすぎて、相手の命を奪うことができるかという観点が失われる恐れがあります。しかし、正しい判定を尊重し、人間の善意を重視する取り組みであれば、ビデオ判定も歓迎すべきだと考えられます。剣道の発展のためには、人間の成長を促すことを中心に据えた議論が重要です。

Opinions are also divided on the introduction of video judging in kendo. Implementing video judging may overemphasize the focus on whether a technique hits or misses, potentially losing sight of the perspective of whether one can take the opponent's life. However, if video judging respects accurate decisions and emphasizes human goodwill, it can be considered a welcome addition. For the development of kendo, it is crucial to focus discussions on promoting personal growth.
